Over the years, we have stripped our buildings of all excess. Smooth glass surfaces, perfectly flat composite panels, and flawless gray concrete walls have blanketed entire cities. However, once a certain point of saturation was reached in the world of architecture, a distinct sensory void emerged. Facades that had forgotten the sense of touch—ones that the eye could see but that the hands and mind could not “feel”—became exhausting.

At this turning point, ornamentation—not in the heavy, ostentatious, and context-detached formalism of the past, but rather in a wholly contemporary, structural, and tactile language.

After the Coldness of Minimalism: Why a Return to Ornamentation on the Facade?

The fatigue of excessive minimalism and the need for “tactile” design

The motto “less is more,” bequeathed to us by modernism, eventually led to spatial monotony. The human eye began to struggle to find a focal point on dull, completely flat surfaces. Designers now want buildings not only to stand, but also to engage in a silent, tactile dialogue with passersby on the street. Even the smallest irregularities, indentations, and protrusions on a surface become images that define the building’s character.

How does the legacy of the past blend with a modern touch? (From Hampton Court to Notting Hill)

This transformation is evident not only in projects built from scratch but also in the reinterpretation of the historic fabric. The meticulous brickwork of Hampton Court—one of London’s iconic facades—or the layered architectural identity of Notting Hill’s streets are not simply copied by today’s architects; rather, they are reinterpreted through the lens of modern production technologies. History is evolving from a nostalgic imitation into a source of inspiration for contemporary facades.

Depth and Shadow: New Tactile Languages in Façade Design

Sculptural brick arrangements and the structural power of relief

Simply building a flat wall is no longer enough. In architecture, bricks and similar modular elements are shifted forward and backward to create a sculptural rhythm on the facade. Every detail—from the thickness of the mortar to the angle of the brick—creates small niches on the surface where light can catch. The wall ceases to be a mere boundary element and transforms into a relief artwork.

Creating Volume on the Surface: Structures That Change Depending on the Direction of Light

The sun strikes at different angles in the morning and evening. Textured facades are like living organisms that change form through the play of shadows at every hour of the day. The volumetric depth imparted to the facade—rather than a solid coat of paint or a flat finish—ensures that the building is in a constant dance with daylight; the structure conveys the passage of time on its own surface.

Breeze Block: Geometric Rhythm and Functional Privacy

Dynamic interaction with daylight: A natural interplay of light and shadow

One of the most elegant ways to capture texture and movement in facade design is through openwork elements.Breeze block, by breaking with the traditional logic of block walls, bring both controlled airflow and filtered daylight into the interior. The geometric shadows cast within the interior act as a natural curtain, elevating life within the building to a whole new dimension.

Breathable partition walls in public and commercial buildings

Not only on exterior facades, but also at café entrances, in office common areas, and in public buildings, the use of Breeze blocks allows the space to breathe. While eliminating the claustrophobic feeling created by completely solid walls, it also preserves privacy inside by filtering it through an aesthetic lens. This dual nature of the material offers designers a flexible playground.

Architectural Decisions: A Fleeting Trend or a Lasting Transformation?

Timeless material selection and the dialogue the facade establishes with the city

Fashions come and go, but what endures in architecture is the honesty of the material and the way it ages. The return of ornamentation is not a fad fueled by fleeting digital trends; it is a rational outcome of a longing for the human scale and the human senses. A well-designed, textured facade does not fade with the passing years; on the contrary, it gains character through the marks left by the elements and becomes etched into the city’s memory.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the reason for the return of ornamentation and textured surfaces in facade design?

Years of excessively minimalist and smooth facade designs eventually led to visual fatigue and a sensory void. The need for textured surfaces—where the human eye and hands can interact with the structure and which cast shadows that shift with the light—has led to the return of ornamentation to architecture in a modern, structural language.

How are Breeze blocks (openwork blocks) used on exterior facades and in interior spaces?

Breeze blocks are used both on exterior facades as sunshades and aesthetic screens, and in interior spaces as airy partition walls. While providing controlled natural light and airflow indoors, they eliminate the sense of confinement created by solid walls, lending spaces an elegant geometric depth.

How do textured and embossed facade elements affect a building’s lifespan and maintenance?

Well-designed textured facade elements, unlike flat and monolithic surfaces, better withstand wear and staining that may occur over time. Natural materials age gracefully with the marks left by the elements, offering a timeless and distinctive aesthetic; when the right material is chosen, they do not require any extra complex maintenance.

The “less is more” motto that has surrounded us in recent years, along with those pristine, snow-white spaces, is slowly losing its appeal. We may have spent 2025 embracing “warm minimalism”—a calmer aesthetic dominated by earth tones—but 2026 is shaping up to be the year of bold, character-filled spaces that completely break the rules. Research in the world of interior design confirms this: 39% of designers cite maximalism, while 38% point to the eclectic style as the main trend for the coming period.

So what happened that suddenly led us to move from such simple lives to colorful, multi-layered homes?

Sterile Environment Fatigue and the Search for “Dopamine” at Home

The answer is actually very human: We’ve grown tired of it. Those overly sterile, featureless homes—which began with the pandemic and persisted for years, looking as if they’d jumped right out of a catalog—gradually began to feel less like living spaces and more like emotionless exhibition halls. We’ve stopped hiding our own memories, the objects we’ve collected and cherished, and the colors we love.

It was right during this process that Dopamine Décor entered our lives. It’s a decorating philosophy that brightens our spirits the moment we walk in, makes us feel good, and triggers our happiness hormones. This isn’t the overwhelming clutter that comes to mind when people hear the terms “maximalism” or “eclecticism.” It’s a layered design language where elements from different eras, seemingly contrasting textures, and bold colors are layered on top of one another with a certain balance.

What Holds a Maximalist Space Together: Richness of Surface

If you want to capture a maximalist vibe, simply painting the wall a bold color or throwing in a few colorful throw pillows isn’t enough. The true character of a space lies in the surfaces that catch the eye and that you touch.

Mass-produced, uniform, identical finishing materials are completely at odds with the spirit of this style. Because it’s a maximalist space;

With patterned ceramics that tell a story,

With stones that give you that natural feel when you touch them,

It is created through contrasting finishes that do not compete with one another but reveal their character when placed side by side.

Combining the warmth of wood on the floor with the raw texture of concrete, and blending a nostalgic pattern on the wall with a modern color, gives the space that much-sought-after depth. Here, the surfaces are not merely a simple backdrop; they are the main protagonists of the space.

When Mass Production Falls Short: Handicrafts and Artisanship

The greatest shortcoming of mass-produced goods is their perfection; for what is perfect is generally soulless. It is nearly impossible to establish the sincere and emotional connection that maximalism seeks through mass-produced items.

Last week’s “Craft Revival: The True Value of Handcrafted Art” , the subtle variations in tone on a tile crafted by a master artisan, the delicate texture of the pattern, or the brushstrokes all lend the space an inimitable identity. Tiles produced using traditional methods and handcrafted surfaces are becoming the strongest complement to this free-spirited design philosophy of 2026.

Project Your Own Story onto Surfaces

If you, too, want to step beyond the boundaries of minimalism in your home or project and create an atmosphere that reflects your own personality, you can start the transformation with the floor you walk on and the walls you touch.

Karoistanbul’s handmade ceramics, cement tile collectionsoffer the rich palette of materials you need for maximalist and eclectic designs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How can you strike a balance to avoid clutter in maximalist decor?

Maximalism isn’t about piling up objects; it’s about combining the right layers. To avoid clutter, a common color palette should be established for the space. For example, if you choose dynamic, patterned floor tiles, you can achieve visual balance by selecting one of the primary colors from those tiles as the background color for the walls and furniture.

Are patterned tiles and maximalist surfaces used in small spaces?

Yes, using the right surfaces in small spaces adds depth and character to the area. In narrow spaces like bathrooms or entryways, you can create a stylish and eye-catching atmosphere without making the space feel cramped by choosing patterned concrete or ceramic tiles for the floor or a single accent wall.

Why should handmade and textured tiles be preferred in maximalist design?

Maximalist design draws inspiration from lived-in character and originality. While mass-produced items offer a cold and generic appearance, the natural variations in texture, tonal transitions, and brushstrokes found in handmade tiles add a depth that shifts with the light, infusing the space with the spirit of craftsmanship.

We live in an age where factories churn out hundreds of products per minute from the same mold, and algorithms exhaust trends in a matter of weeks before imposing new ones. Everything is fast, everything is accessible, and, unfortunately, everything is almost identical. Right in the midst of this mass-production saturation, a quiet but powerful counter-movement is gaining momentum: Craft Revival (The Rebirth of Craft).

So why is it that, for some reason, people are turning away from flawless mass-produced items—which are readily available and inexpensive—and toward handmade objects that take weeks to create, cost more, and bear the marks of their craftsman? What lies behind this value that resists the speed of mass production?

The Coldness of Perfection and the Quest for Originality

The promise of mass production is millimeter-precise symmetry and perfection. However, when you look at a mass-produced object or surface finishes that have come off an assembly line, the most dominant feeling you get is usually “coldness.” Each one is an exact copy of the other.

When it comes to handcrafted items, however, the situation is entirely different. A product created by a craftsman may feature a slight asymmetry, a unique hue acquired during firing, or a natural indentation in the material’s texture. These details—which might be considered “flaws” from an industrial perspective—are, in fact, what give the product its identity. The Craft Revival movement celebrates these charming imperfections and uniqueness as a counterpoint to the uniformity created by the pursuit of perfection.

Objects with a Story: The Return of the Question “Who Made It?”

In traditional consumption habits, the connection we form with an object is not limited to its function alone. Mass production has severed this connection between people and objects; we no longer know who made the clothes, furniture, or finishes that adorn our spaces, or under what conditions they were produced.

Handcrafting, on the other hand, gives the product a new story :

Investment of Time: While fast-moving consumer goods are produced in a matter of hours, artisanal products embody patience and the accumulation of years of experience.

The Human Touch: What you’re buying isn’t just an object—it’s the work, focus, and aesthetic sensibility of a master craftsman.

Wear and Patina: Fabrics shaped using traditional methods gain “character” rather than simply wearing out as they age.

Consumers now value not just a function, but the human story behind it.

Slow Consumption and Sustainability

The burden that the throwaway culture places on the planet is plain to see. Cheap products that are replaced every season have become the enemy of both the ecological balance and the aesthetic character of spaces.

Craft Revival, directly the philosophy of slow living and the philosophy of sustainability. An object crafted by hand:

Durable: Because the focus is on quality, durable materials and timeless designs are used.

Repairable: While mass-produced items are designed to be thrown away when they break, products made using traditional techniques are suitable for maintenance and can be used for many years.

It’s local: Reduces the carbon footprint; supports local artisans, local materials, and the local economy.

Traces of Craftsmanship in Spaces: Bringing Soul to Living Spaces

The Craft Revival movement isn’t limited to small decorative objects; it’s also making a strong impact on architecture and interior design. People now want to see textures crafted by skilled hands in their living spaces, rather than mass-produced surfaces.

Especially in wall and floor designs, Karoistanbul—which comes to life through the shaping and firing of traditional clay— handmade ceramic collections—brought to life through the shaping and firing of traditional clay—you can add a unique warmth to any space. Similarly, with our Karo products, which bring traditional motifs and natural pigments to life, break the monotony of mass production and give every space its own unique character.

The New Face of Craft in the Digital Age

The revival of craftsmanship does not mean a complete rejection of technology. On the contrary, today’s artisans are combining traditional methods with modern communication tools.

Social media platforms and independent e-commerce infrastructures enable a craftsman in his workshop to connect his products with a design from the other side of the world. Videos of the production process, moments capturing the processing of raw materials, and the artisan’s daily routines are among the most popular content in the digital world. Rather than eliminating craftsmanship, technology is transforming into a showcase that brings it to the forefront.

What Lies Ahead: Will Mass Production Come to an End?

Of course, mass production isn’t going to disappear from our lives; we need fast, large-scale production in certain areas. But what the Craft Revival reminds us is this: Not everything has to be fast and cheap.

In our living spaces, where we seek meaning, spirit, and originality, handcrafted work will never lose its value. In a world where mass production leads to mass consumption, every handcrafted object remains a lasting mark left by time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does “Craft Revival” mean?

Craft Revival is a global movement that emerged as a reaction to industrial mass production and fast consumption; it revalues traditional craftsmanship, original designs, and local production.

Why are handmade products more expensive?

Handmade products are produced in limited quantities per unit of time. The price reflects not only the high-quality raw materials used but also the artisan’s experience, the significant amount of time spent, and the non-mechanized labor involved. Furthermore, there is no advantage from economies of scale found in mass production.

How do you care for handmade ceramics and tiles?

Handmade ceramic and tile products require more specialized care than mass-produced items due to their natural and porous structure. It is recommended to use pH-neutral cleaners and a damp cloth instead of chemical cleaners containing abrasives or strong acids. With protective sealants applied to the surface and proper cleaning methods, these products will retain their original aesthetic appeal for many years.

What’s the first thing you notice when you step into a space? People usually think it’s the lighting or the arrangement of the furniture. But our bodies react much faster than our minds do: the dryness of the air, the natural scent filling your lungs, the sound echoing beneath your footsteps, and the texture your fingertips touch…

This multisensory experience, which is often overlooked in traditional architecture and modern urban life, is today “Sensory-Rich” spaces is once again taking center stage in our lives. Instead of living in sterile boxes surrounded by synthetic materials, creating living spaces that breathe, stimulate the sense of touch, and preserve our natural rhythms is no longer a luxury—it is a biological necessity.

Synthetic Siege: Why Is Indoor Air Polluted?

We spend nearly 90% of our time indoors. The air we breathe without realizing it contains plastic-based paints, adhesives emitted from laminated furniture, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) .

Synthetic surfaces do not trap or regulate moisture. On the contrary, they generate static electricity, which attracts dust and disrupts the room’s humidity balance during seasonal transitions. The result?

A constantly dry throat,

Morning fatigue that just won’t go away,

Difficulty concentrating and headaches.

At this very point, we need to strip away the synthetic layers and return to the raw materials—that is, to nature.

How Do Natural Materials Regulate Humidity and Air Quality?

Natural materials are not static; they are in a constant state of chemical and physical interaction with their environment. In architecture, this phenomenon is referred to as “hygroscopic behavior” —that is, the material’s ability to absorb and release moisture.

1. Clay Plaster and Lime: The Breathability of Walls

Applying drywall and plastic paint is like putting a plastic bag over the walls. Traditional clay plasters and lime-based coatings, on the other hand, absorb excess moisture from the environment like a sponge. When the air dries out, they gradually release this moisture back into the room.

Natural Filter: Clay has the ability to neutralize odors and harmful gases in the air.

Mold and Mildew Inhibitor: Thanks to its high-alkaline composition, lime acts as a natural barrier against the growth of bacteria and mold.

2. Solid Wood: A Natural Humidity Regulator

Solid wood treated with raw or natural oils expands and contracts in response to ambient humidity, maintaining relative humidity within the ideal range of 40%–60% . This range is the critical threshold that minimizes the time viruses and bacteria remain airborne.

3. Stone and Raw Ceramics: Thermal Mass and Texture

Natural stones do more than just provide visual tranquility; thanks to their high thermal mass, they store heat during the day and release it slowly at night. This prevents sudden temperature fluctuations, reducing the need for climate control and, consequently, preventing the air from becoming dry.

How Does Sensory Architecture Affect Our Health?

The impact of a space on our health isn’t limited to the chemicals we breathe in. Tactile and auditory stimuli have a direct influence on our nervous system.

[Synthetic Surfaces] >> Static Electricity + Dryness >> Sympathetic Nervous System (Stress/Triggering)

[Natural Materials] >> Texture + Ideal Humidity + Acoustics >> Parasympathetic Nervous System (Rest/Recovery)

4 Steps to Sensory-Enhance Your Living Space

You don’t have to build your entire home from scratch. You can change the atmosphere of your living space with small, strategic touches:

Get Rid of Plastic Paints: Instead of using glossy paints containing solvents on your walls, opt for breathable silicate, lime, or clay-based paints.

Replace Synthetic Textiles: Switch from polyester curtains and acrylic rugs to natural linen, cotton, and wool fabrics. This change will significantly reduce the amount of dust in your home.

Let the Wood’s Surface Breathe: Instead of wood treated with varnish, choose solid wood furniture protected with natural beeswax or flaxseed oil. Let the wood continue to breathe.

Incorporate Biophilic Elements: Smooth, flawless surfaces can be mentally taxing. The rough texture of stone, the knots in wood, and the tactile variety of handwoven fabrics soothe the nervous system.

An Endless Balance

Creating sensory-rich spaces is much more than just a decorating trend. A home designed with natural materials is like a living organism: one where the air never feels dry, the scent never becomes artificial, and the space protects the well-being of those who live there. Adding the texture of raw wood or a lime-plastered wall to your living space is the most lasting investment you can make not just in your home, but in the quality of your daily life.

You, too, can choose from our collection of kitchen ceramics: all handmade and designed to complement sensory-rich spaces: kitchen ceramics, bathroom ceramics, outdoor ceramics or all our ceramic collection you can browse our collections.

What Is Sustainable Architecture?

Sustainable architecture is a design philosophy that, starting with a building’s design and extending through the construction, use, and demolition/redevelopment phases, places no burden on nature throughout its entire life cycle and uses resources efficiently rather than depleting them.

Contrary to popular belief, this concept isn’t just about placing a few solar panels on the roof of a building or installing air conditioning systems behind glass facades. The real challenge is to design spaces that align with nature’s own cycles without conflicting with the geography, climate, local materials, and ecosystem of the site.

Why Is Sustainable Architecture So Important?

A very large portion of global energy consumption, raw material use, and greenhouse gas emissions stems directly from the construction and real estate sectors. In other words, one of the greatest pressures on the planet’s future comes from the buildings we live and work in.

Sustainable architecture emerges as a necessity precisely at this point:

Helps curb the resource crisis: It prevents the unlimited consumption of natural raw materials and water.

Reduces the carbon footprint: It minimizes emissions throughout the entire process, from the production of the material to the heating of the building.

It is cost-effective in the long term: It reduces energy and maintenance costs, resulting in savings over the building’s operational lifespan.

Provides healthy living spaces: Because it uses natural ingredients instead of synthetic materials containing chemicals, it protects indoor air quality and human health.

That’s why, even though technological systems may be the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about sustainable architecture, the real change begins at a much more fundamental level: The choice of materials.

Carbon Footprint of Materials: Pre-Construction

A building’s ecological footprint is determined by the materials selected even before the construction site is set up—indeed, as early as the conceptual phase. Where a stone, piece of wood, or ceramic tile comes from, how many kilometers it has traveled to reach the construction site, and how much carbon was emitted during its production are now direct design decisions.

This is precisely why local stone, wood, and ceramic materials have once again taken center stage in architecture. Behind this transformation lies not merely an aesthetic pursuit; there is a new perspective that considers production, logistics, and the environmental impact as a unified whole. The term we often hear today, “architecture that leaves no trace” is, in fact, the perfect embodiment of this approach.

Why Are We Turning to Local Materials?

Sourcing materials from thousands of kilometers away not only drives up costs but also skyrockets carbon emissions from transportation. Local sourcing, on the other hand, means much shorter logistics processes, minimal transportation emissions, and the convenience of being able to connect directly with producers.

In contemporary architectural practice, it’s no longer just the technical durability of a material that’s being questioned. Designers are also looking at the story behind it: Where exactly was this product manufactured, from what raw materials, and under what conditions?

Tracing the Material: Material Provenance

At the design table, the question “Which material should we choose?” no longer stands alone. It is now inevitably accompanied by a new question: “Where does the material come from?”

In the literature “material provenance” refers to the traceability and transparency of the entire process—from raw materials to the manufacturer, and from the factory location to the supply chain. When this transparency is achieved, the project’s sustainability goals are no longer merely theoretical; they become concrete and measurable data.

The Circular Economy at the Local Level

The circular economy is often thought to consist solely of recycling bins. In reality, the concept encompasses a much broader scope: extending the lifespan of materials, ensuring they can be easily repaired, and minimizing the consumption of raw materials.

Local stone, wood, and natural ceramics operate precisely on this principle. Their ability to withstand the test of time, their ease of maintenance, and the fact that they can be dismantled and reused when necessary—combined with local sourcing—create a truly circular ecosystem.

The Key to Low-Carbon Buildings

Natural stone and ceramic are among the most durable materials in the construction industry. Because they do not wear out easily, they eliminate the need for constant replacement—and thus the use of additional resources.

When you keep the supply source close to the project site, the transportation aspect of the project is simplified, and transportation-related emissions are significantly reduced. This makes local ceramics and stone indispensable components of low-carbon projects.

What Exactly Is “Architecture That Leaves No Trace”?

“Leave-no-trace architecture” is an approach that considers a building not just in terms of its operational phase, but throughout its entire life cycle—from its creation to its end. The right choice of materials, production methods, transportation, maintenance, and what will happen once its useful life is over… All of these are part of a single equation.

Local production, natural materials, timeless finishes, and short supply chains form the foundation of this philosophy. The ultimate goal is clear: to design spaces that harmonize with their surroundings, take as little as possible from nature, and leave as small a footprint as possible.

In summary

The days when we measured sustainability in architecture solely by the energy efficiency of equipment are long gone. Where materials come from, how they are produced, and the distance they travel before reaching the construction site are just as important as the building’s performance.

Local stone, wood, and ceramics with their short supply chains, low carbon footprint, and long lifespan—are the most powerful drivers of this shift in mindset. This is precisely where “low-impact architecture” comes into play: establishing the right connection between a building and its environment from the very moment the first material is selected.

Today, city life forces most of us to spend nearly the entire day in enclosed spaces that feel like boxes. Trapped between four walls, modern humans unconsciously experience a sense of unease stemming from their disconnection from nature. It is precisely at this point that a movement is gaining momentum in the world of architecture—one born not merely from an aesthetic concern, but from an existential need: Biophilic Design.

Simply placing a few potted plants in a space or painting a wall green isn’t enough to make a project biophilic. True biophilic architecture is a comprehensive ecosystem design that seamlessly integrates human biology, environmental psychology and structural engineering.

Not Just a Visual Choice; A Connection Rooted in the Essence of Humanity

When we bring the concept of biophilia—which essentially means “love of life”—into architecture, we encounter a discipline that integrates nature’s rhythm, light, and raw materials into living spaces. The primary goal here is not to create flashy decorations, but to reawaken humanity’s ancient, evolutionary connection to nature through spatial experience.

When applying this approach to our projects, we focus on three key layers:

Nature’s Direct Infusion into the Space: Daylight reaching even the farthest corners of the room, a stream of fresh air flowing in, and the soothing sound of water…

Natural Analogies: Incorporating the flawless fractal patterns, organic curves, and raw materials (wood, stone, marble) that grow more beautiful with age—as seen in nature—into every detail, from furniture to building facades.

The Nature of the Space: That delicate balance between offering sheltered niches that make people feel safe and creating expansive panoramic views that evoke a sense of openness.

The Language of Numbers: What Does Biophilia Tell Us?

Global studies clearly demonstrate the impact of spaces designed to integrate with nature on people:

In the Workplace: As focus and productivity improve, employee absenteeism rates due to stress are significantly decreasing.

In Healthcare Facilities: Patients in rooms that receive natural light and overlook green spaces are seen to recover more quickly.

At Home: By lowering cortisol (stress) levels, it promotes mental clarity and a much better sleep routine.

Sustainability and Smart Structural Engineering

Biophilic design is now one of the most critical pillars of global green building certifications such as LEED or WELL. For us, this process is an engineering decision that must be managed with technical precision:

Living Microclimates: Vertical gardens or living walls used indoors do more than just provide a visual feast; they balance the humidity in the environment, filter the air, and provide natural sound insulation.

Circadian Rhythm: Bringing the dynamic fluctuations of natural light indoors supports living in harmony with the human biological clock. Feeling the passage of time even within indoor spaces creates a sense of mental comfort.

Material Integrity: Instead of artificial, mass-produced, and soulless composites; breathing life into elements like raw wood, exposed concrete, and fired clay—materials that remind you of nature when you touch them.

Structures That Leave a Mark on the Future

With every new project we undertake, we don’t just design a building; we design the quality of life for the people who will live within it. The biophilic approach is not a passing fad or a popular trend in our architectural practice; it is an essential standard for a healthier future in harmony with nature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is biophilic design an expensive solution? How does it affect the budget?

Biophilic design should not be viewed as a luxury expense. Of course, large vertical plant walls or specialized smart automation systems can increase the initial investment cost; however, creating a floor plan that maximizes natural light, selecting the right raw materials, or designing for natural air circulation does not incur additional costs. On the contrary, it is actually a smart investment that pays for itself over the long term by delivering energy savings and boosting human productivity.

Isn’t it hard to care for live plants indoors? Does it take a lot of time?

This is entirely a matter of engineering decisions made during the design phase. With the right architectural design, local plant species that are best suited to the space’s light and humidity levels and require minimal maintenance are selected. Additionally, in corporate projects or large-scale residential developments, the maintenance burden can be reduced to nearly zero by integrating self-watering smart hydroponic systems or vertical garden automation.

Does biophilic design simply mean “green building”? What is the difference between the two?

These are concepts that complement each other but have different focuses. Green buildings (LEED, BREEAM, etc.) focus primarily on a building’s carbon footprint, energy and water conservation—in other words, its environmental impact. Biophilic design, on the other hand, focuses on the people within the building and their biological and psychological well-being. In summary, while green buildings aim to protect nature, biophilic design brings nature and people together.

Is a biophilic transformation possible in small offices or those with limited natural light?

It’s definitely possible. A biophilic approach isn’t limited to massive glass facades. In spaces with insufficient natural light, artificial lighting technologies that support the circadian rhythm, surface finishes that mimic the fractal geometries found in nature, the use of tactile materials like natural wood and stone, and even acoustic designs incorporating natural sounds can all create a very powerful biophilic effect.

If you’d like, here are some handmade ceramics that would go well with my biofiligree designs Handmade Ceramics and Terrazzo Tiles collections, as well as our products in other categories.

One of the most important decisions in home renovation and decoration is choosing the right floor covering. This decision directly affects not only the aesthetics of the space, but also its ease of use, durability and long-term maintenance costs. Terms such as tile, ceramic and tiles can make this choice more complicated. Often used interchangeably, these words actually refer to different materials and areas of use. So how do you make the right decision for your home? Let’s take a closer look at the differences between these three terms, the characteristics of each material and what to consider when making a choice.

1. Tile, Ceramic and Tiles: Key Differences and Relationships

Understanding the relationship between these three terms is the first and most important step in making the right choice.

Tile: It is actually an umbrella term. It covers all slab floor and wall coverings made of different materials such as ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass or concrete. Calling a product “tile” tells us that it is just a flat plate, but does not give us any precise information about what material it is made of.

Tile: A type of ceramic made from a combination of materials such as clay, kaolin and quartz, usually fired at low temperatures. Tiles are often produced using a single firing technique and their surface is coated with a glossy, glassy glaze. This glaze makes them resistant to water, but they are more porous and less dense than ceramics. Because of these characteristics, they are mostly preferred for wall cladding, especially in bathrooms and kitchens. If laid on the floor, they run the risk of cracking or breaking easily.

Ceramic: Made from clay-based materials such as tiles, but fired at higher temperatures. This firing process makes the structure of ceramics denser and harder. Ceramics can be used for both wall and floor coverings. Ceramic tiles better resist heavy foot traffic thanks to the hardness and durability of their surface.

To summarize: All tiles and ceramics are tiles, but not all tiles are tiles or ceramics. The term tile also includes materials that are harder and more durable than ceramic, such as porcelain. Therefore, the best approach is to focus on the type of material (porcelain, ceramic, tile, etc.) and its technical characteristics.

2. Material Selection According to the Function of the Space: Which Room, Which Floor?

When choosing a floor covering, the function of the space is as important as the aesthetics. Different areas of your home require different levels of durability and properties.

Living Room and Living Room: These are the most used areas of the house and where guests are entertained. Since they are exposed to heavy foot traffic, a material with high resistance to abrasion, scratches and impacts should be selected. Porcelain tiles are one of the most ideal options in this regard. Porcelain is denser and harder than ceramic, which makes it more resistant to impact. It is also easy to clean and stain-resistant, making it a practical solution for living rooms.

Kitchens Splashes, grease stains and the risk of heavy utensils falling make the kitchen floor a challenging environment. Therefore, a floor covering that is water-resistant, non-slip and easy to clean is a must. Glazed ceramic tiles or porcelain tiles are the safest and most hygienic options for the kitchen. Tiles with a matt finish provide additional safety by reducing the risk of slipping on wet floors.

Bathrooms Because of the constant exposure to moisture and water, bathroom floors should always be waterproof and slip-resistant. While tiles are ideal for walls, it is safer to use ceramic or porcelain on the floor. In even wetter areas, such as inside the shower cabin, small-sized mosaic tiles or special tiles with non-slip surfaces should be preferred.

Bedrooms: One of the least trafficked areas of the home. Therefore, durability can take a back seat. Aesthetics, comfort and a feeling of warmth are more important in flooring. Wood-look ceramic tiles offer an excellent option for bedrooms, combining the warmth and texture of real wood with the practicality of ceramic.

3. Aesthetics and Design: Add Character to the Space

Floor covering determines the overall atmosphere and style of a space. Therefore, choosing the right color, texture and pattern is of great importance.

Oversized Tiles: One of the most popular trends of recent years, large-sized tiles are especially preferred in modern and minimalist decorations. Since it creates fewer joint lines, it provides a seamless and monolithic appearance on the floors. This helps the space look wider and more spacious.

Color Selection: Light-colored tiles make small spaces look brighter and more spacious, while dark tiles can add sophistication and drama. Wood patterned tiles provide a natural warmth, while marble or stone-look tiles create a luxurious atmosphere.

Patterns and Textures: Geometric patterned tiles or three-dimensional textures can transform floors into works of art, adding dynamism and character to the space. Such tiles, especially in foyers or kitchen floors, can become the focal point of the space.

4. Budget and Implementation: A Long-Term Investment

Choosing the right floor covering involves not only the initial cost, but also the long-term maintenance costs and the installation process.

Ceramic and Porcelain Tiles: Generally more affordable than natural stones. They are easily available and have a wide range of prices. They are extremely easy to maintain; they just need to be wiped with routine cleaning materials.

Natural Stones (Marble, Travertine): Although they offer elegance and a luxurious look, their cost is higher. They also have the potential to stain due to their porous structure and should be regularly maintained with special cleaning products and protective polishes.

Professional Application: Regardless of the material you choose, it is critical for the life and aesthetics of the floor that it is installed by an expert. Especially the installation of large-sized tiles and complex patterns requires meticulousness and mastery.

The right floor covering is not just the choice of a material; it is the art of understanding the spirit of the space and finding a suitable solution. Knowing the differences between tile, ceramic and tiles, mastering the usage areas of each of them and making the most suitable choice for your own lifestyle will enable you to make the right decision for your home both aesthetically and practically. Remember, a well-chosen floor increases the comfort and value of your home for many years.

Reflecting the soul of our homes, floors are one of the most critical elements of decoration. The year 2026 brings exciting innovations in the world of flooring, combining both aesthetics and functionality. Floors are no longer just the surfaces we walk on, they are becoming the main elements that determine the character of our living spaces. So, which floor trends will stand out in our homes in the coming year? Let’s take a detailed journey.

1. The Rise of Natural and Sustainable Materials

In 2026, environmental awareness will remain one of the most important factors in flooring choices. Consumers are looking for materials that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also eco-friendly and sustainable. Products derived from natural resources such as recycled tiles, cork and bamboo offer ideal options for creating living spaces that are both environmentally friendly and healthy. This trend is becoming an indispensable choice, especially for those who adopt minimalist and modern decoration styles.

Wood-Look Ceramics and Porcelain: Combining the warmth and natural texture of real wood with the durability of ceramic, these products are both suitable for intensive use and are not affected by moisture. It is especially popular in areas where wood can be challenging, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Recycled Glass and Stone Tiles: A combination of art and sustainability, these tiles add depth to spaces with unique patterns and colors.

2. Oversized Tiles and Minimal Grouting

One of the most effective ways to make spaces look larger and more spacious is to use large-sized tiles. In 2026, the popularity of tiles with gigantic dimensions such as 60×120 cm and even 120×120 cm will peak. These tiles provide a seamless and monolithic appearance on floors as they create fewer joint lines.

Advantages: Easy to clean, offering a modern and sophisticated aesthetic. It is especially preferred in living rooms, wide corridors and luxury bathrooms.

Application Tips: Correct installation of large-sized tiles requires professional skill. A small mistake can negatively affect the appearance of the entire floor. Therefore, choosing the right master is of great importance.

3. The Return of Vibrant Colors and Geometric Patterns

While the past was dominated by natural tones and pastel colors, 2026 brings an explosion of bold colors and dynamic patterns on floors. Vibrant colored tiles or geometric patterned tiles, especially in areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, add energy and character to spaces.

Geometric Patterns: Shapes such as hexagons, herringbones and triangles create a work of art on floors. These patterns are ideal for making small spaces more interesting and inviting.

Retro Touches: Patterned tiles with vintage influences from the 70s and 80s combine with modern furniture to create a unique retro-modern atmosphere.

4. Three Dimensional (3D) and Textured Surfaces

Floors are no longer just flat surfaces. In 2026, textured and three-dimensional tiles will offer a sensory experience. Slightly embossed patterns or pronounced textures create shadows that change according to the angle of the light, adding depth and dynamism to the space.

Areas of Use: It is preferred especially in foyers and certain parts of living rooms to make the floor an accent point.

Examples Stone textured tiles, wood grain surfaces or specially designed embossed tiles are the best examples of this trend.

5. Unlimited Transitions and Combination of Different Materials

The year 2026 breaks the notion of a uniform floor. Material and pattern transitions between different rooms create a fluid and dynamic sense of space. For example, when moving from the living room to the kitchen, a smooth transition from wood-look ceramic to concrete-effect tiles will become very popular. This trend is used to emphasize different functions without dividing spaces, especially in open-plan homes.

6. Smart Floor Coverings

Technology is also being integrated into floor coverings. In addition to heating systems, smart floors are starting to take their place in the homes of the future. These floors can offer features such as lighting sensors, temperature control and even health data monitoring.

Examples: Smart heating systems allow you to control the temperature of the floor and save energy.

2026 will be a year that brings together aesthetics, functionality and sustainability in the world of flooring. Designs inspired by natural materials, the spaciousness of large-scale tiles, the energy of vibrant colors and the depth of textured surfaces offer new ways to personalize and add character to our homes. For those who are thinking of renovating their homes, following these trends will help them make the right decisions both aesthetically and practically. Remember, the right flooring can not only beautify a space, but also improve your quality of life.

What is Palladiana?

Palladiana is a decorative surfacing technique in which marble pieces of different sizes are brought together in a mosaic pattern. This method, which dates back to ancient times, has been reinterpreted today and offers aesthetic and durable solutions for indoor floors.

At Karoistanbul, Palladiana is produced by preparing marble pieces on mesh. During the application, these nets are placed on the floor, followed by joint pouring. In the final stage, the surface has the appearance of a monolithic whole. This production and application technique is what makes Palladiana unique.

Meeting of Craftsmanship and Memories

Each piece of marble bears the traces of years and the labor of craftsmen. Palladiana is not just a surface; it is also a composition born of stories, traditions and craftsmanship.

A nostalgic texture with marble pieces from the past

Modern lines with today’s design vision

A monolithic and complete surface after application

Uses of Palladiana

Palladiana, can be applied to different scales and designson indoor floors:

Hall, living area and corridor floors in residential projects

Floor applications in commercial spaces (hotel lobbies, restaurants, cafes)

Aesthetic solutions in special design areas (bar front, showroom, foyer)

Value Added to Spaces with Palladiana

Palladiana is a collage that combines historical texture with modern creativity. The transformation of the marble pieces prepared on the mesh into a holistic floor by pouring them on site creates a different value both aesthetically and technically.

Conclusion

Palladiana is not just a cladding material; it is an art form in which the past and the present coexist. The combination of craftsmanship, time and design tells a unique story in every space.
