  • Patterned Tile Mosaic – How to ship and stock the Tile Cement

Cured products are put into thin cartons with thin polyethylene sheets between each layer and then wrapped in a stretch film to ensure that they are not scattered during shipment by packing onto pallets.

Products are delivered on the truck at the factory.

Stack the tile pallets in a single row. Products delivered with the crate pallet can be stacked in 2 rows.

Only a forklift must be used when unloading on site. Deformation might occur with the unload by crane or tow truck.

The floor where the pallets are to be lowered should be flat and the pallets should be lowered parallel to the ground.

How different are patterned tiles-cement tiles from ceramics?

They are hand-made. Each tile is made by hand one by one. Therefore none of them resembles another. Slight color and shade differences, as well as thickness differences (-+1), can occur. And this is what makes patterned tiles-cement tiles unique. Each tile is unparalleled. This is why it adds an unparalleled style and silky texture to the floors.

Patterns are not transferred to the surface as it is the case with ceramics; the colors forming the patterns are not on the surface but in the body of the tile in layers. That is why the pattern does not disappear even if there is wearing.

Unlike ceramics, the patterned tiles-cement tiles are not put in the oven. They are subject to a curing process in special steam rooms and then left to reach a hard consistency. This curing process takes about 3 weeks.

What should I pay attention to when buying patterned tiles-cement tiles?

Carefully examine the technical features (thickness, size) in addition to aesthetic features when choosing a product.

Choose the right material by considering the physical conditions (interior – exterior) and climate conditions of the place to be covered with tiles.

Please take into consideration the fact that there may be differences in colors and shades as the components completely consist of natural materials.

There may also be differences in thickness (+-1) as traditional methods are used in production.

Although there are flooring warnings available on the product packaging you can also ask for our application guide using the link below.

The colors can mix in a micronized manner on the surface of patterned tiles (encaustic tiles) due to a pressing procedure with high pressure. Don’t be surprised with this. That is why the surface of the tile needs to be corroded.

Patterned tiles (encaustic tiles) feature high absorptivity. It is a must to apply an impregnated protector, which provides dirt and waterproofing and does not create a film layer on the surface.

Every single mark seen on patterned tiles (encaustic tiles) can be perceived as a problem, but, it should not be forgotten that every process from the cement mixture preparation and mold casting to pressing, steam room, and quality check stages is carried out by hand one by one and that such activity reflects on the tiles as “handprint.” Tiles may experience slight side clicks and pattern shifts, as well as differences in color shades and thicknesses. In addition, in order for such mark to be subject to complaints, the mark should damage the appearance of the flooring or lower the flooring performance expected under normal terms of use.

Improper flooring or grinding workmanship will also reflect the patterned tiles (encaustic tiles); the tiles will break, fall off, and experience such reactions. The quality of the surface covered with tiles depends on the quality of the material, application of the tiles, as well as maintenance and repair processes.

What should I pay attention to when I deliver my patterned tile-cement tile order?

Check your order personally.

Place products from different pallets on the floor after delivering the product.

An evaluation should be made at this stage if a feedback will be given about our products.

How much resistant are patterned tiles-cement tiles to slide?

The Karoistanbul tiles’ resistance to slide is

R-10 according to the DIN 51130: 2014-2 test.

Friction Coefficient:

Dry / polished: 0.83        Dry / unpolished: 0.88

Wet / polished: 0.68         Wet / unpolished: 0.92

No slipperiness occurs as the friction coefficient on the tiles is higher compared to other ceramic-like tiles.

Where can I find the information regarding how the patterned tiles-cement tiles will be used or cleaned?

Patterned tiles (encaustic tiles) are pressed under high pressure.  Despite this being the case, they are porous. That is why they are sensitive to dirt and moisture until they are applied a protective polish.

The raw materials used in their manufacture are natural. That is why they are sensitive to acid as is the case with other natural stones (such as marbles). That is why aggressive and acidic detergents must be avoided when cleaning. Acidic foods (e.g. wines) must be immediately cleaned.

Although there are flooring and maintenance warnings available on the product packaging you can also ask for our application and usage guide using the link below. This guide includes detailed information as to how to use and clean the product.

Do you have expert teams to suggest the application processes of patterned tiles-cement tiles?

Firstly our sales consultant can provide you with professional support regarding the application processes of patterned tiles (encaustic tiles). In addition, you can also reach our company to get the contact details of constructors who do not have a direct relationship with our company but regularly build our products.

Do you have any suggestions regarding the binding materials to use for the floor and wall applications of patterned tiles-cement tiles?

You can easily use the products of reliable brands. Moreover, you can also get detailed information from their websites.

Is it okay to use patterned tiles-cement tiles on floors with underfloor heating systems?

Patterned tiles (encaustic tiles) are suitable materials to use on floors with underfloor heating systems.

The floor sub-radiator must be in a closed condition for at least 12 hours before the application can begin on floors with underfloor heating systems.

The underfloor heating system should never be opened during the flooring application and the subsequent bonding (hardening) process. Many subcontractors may want to test their systems as soon as the flooring application finishes but such an act may cause permanent damages to the flooring.

During the flooring application, proper expansion gaps must be left in the bottom parts of walls at certain intervals to help with the floor-based reductions and enlargements.

An elastic binding mortar resistant to thermic deformation.

In addition, an elastic joint filter that will be able to have a sufficient shock absorber effect ensures a guaranteed application.

There must be a joined gap of at least 3 mm between the patterned tiles (encaustic tiles), and a joined gap of about 10 mm must be left in the junction point of the corners and walls.

An elastic paste must be applied in the junction point of the corners and walls.

Karoistanbul is not responsible for application mistakes that may occur if the product is used for the wrong purposes or the above-mentioned application terms and suggestions are not followed.

Patterned tiles (encaustic tiles) are cement-based products. Their compliance with the values stipulated by the Turkish Standards Institution (TSE) and the European Standards are proved as a result of the tests carried out by TSE. With regard to the water absorption from the surface and water absorption by mass, they absorb a lower amount of water compared to the amount stated in the TSE and EN standards.

However, as is the case with all cement-based products, the following issues must be avoided in order to help this product last long:

The water coming from below must be prevented from penetrating into the body

The water coming from surface/above must be prevented from penetrating into the body of the tile.

In case such acts are not done:

If the water penetrating into the body of the tile is subject to a strong frosting event the expansion of the frozen water results in tensions causing weakening, and the recurrence of such condition may cause fractures.

If the process where the tile frequently absorbs water and gets dry and evacuates that water becomes a repeating phenomenon the durability of the tile can be negatively affected.

A proper waterproofing must be carried out in order to prevent the floor, which will be covered with tiles, being subject to moisture from the bottom.

2-The binding materials and joint filters to be used must be chosen among advanced products with low water absorption features (Ardex N23).

A sealer providing water and dirt proofing is applied after the tiling, joint filling and, if necessary, corroding-grinding processes conclude and the floor gets completely dry. The sealer process must be repeated at certain intervals (in accordance with the suggestions by the product manufacturer).

What should I pay attention to during the application of patterned tiles-cement tiles?

The constructor who will apply the tiles must be a competent person.

The product and pattern codes available on the packaging must be checked and the flooring application must be carried out in accordance with the purchased product.

The floor which will be covered with tiles must be smooth, dry, dust-free, oil-free, and clean.

Floor screed must be fully cured and be level, straight and fully dried out and cracks, if any, must be covered with repair mortar.

The floor dust must be absorbed using a strong vacuum and the other contaminants (mortar, plaster, oil etc.), if any, must be also cleaned.

The floor must be cleaned once again using a wet brush to get rid of the last remaining dust and to moisten it very slightly. (During this stage no excessive amount of water should be used otherwise the water can penetrate into deeper areas.)

Always make sure your constructor reads our company guide entitled “The Technical Details regarding the Tile Flooring, Grinding, Protector Application and Maintenance” before he starts to apply the tiles.

Warn your constructor to be careful with the sizes, patterns, and product codes.

By the nature of the production technique, it is unavoidable to experience acceptable levels of thickness and color shade differences in the tiles that are completely produced using hand-made and natural materials. Before the tiling application starts, ask your constructor to place the tiles on the floor and distribute all the potential color shade differences to all the area to be covered with tiles.

Ask your constructor to carry out the flooring application by leaving a proper joint gap (at least 2 mm) between the tiles in accordance with the product. (The technical document sent to you includes detailed information about this matter).

As binding materials, it is recommended to use flex-based mortars in places where sudden temperature changes occur and to use mortars that can meet the requirements of waterproofing in wet areas requiring waterproofing.

On the other hand, flex-based fuga is recommended for joint filling applications in outdoor places.

The changes necessary to check and make the tiling surface suitable for covering must be carried out.

The materials must be checked before the tiles are fastened to the floor.

A rubber mallet and suchlike should never be used when placing the tiles. Using rubber mallets and such tools may cause small cracks afterward.

The information stated in the document entitled “The Technical Details regarding the Tile Flooring, Grinding, Protector Application and Maintenance” must be followed when fastening the tiles to the floor. (With the weight and vibration of the grinding machine in particular) movements and small cracks can occur over time in (encrusted) tiles with empty below surfaces due to not having been placed on the binding mortar on time.

The binding material must be applied in a thin (1 mm) layer (both) on the floor using a toothed comb of 8-10 mm and the back part of the tile using the smooth face of the comb or a trowel in a manner to avoid any kind of gap.

Tiles must be placed on the floor using only the pressure of a hand with back-and-forth movements of 1-2 mm, and no mallets – even if rubber – should be used. Hitting on the tiles with a mallet causes fractures that are not apparent at first but become visible after a while.

It is essential not to leave a gap between the tiles and the existing floor. Otherwise, fractures occur when the tiles are exposed to heavy loads and strong pressures in the future.

The applied tiles must be protected from factors such as mechanical loads, oil, thinner, water, strong sunlight, and wind and must be prevented from moving and suffering from a thoroughly contaminated surface until the binding material reaches a completely hard consistency.

Following the bonding process of the tiles, a certain amount of time (about 1 day) must pass depending on the type of the application surface, ambient conditions, and the type of the bonding material and then a joint filling application must be carried out.

The floor should not be put into service right away in order to ensure a healthy bonding and joint filling application. Places that are opened to traffic following the bonding process or right after the joint filling process experience tile movements, joint fractures, and discharges over time.

The joint filling material remains seen on the surface after the tiling application will start to get dry in a short time and such remains must be cleaned before they reach a hard consistency on the surface. Only water and a sponge will be enough to clean the joint.

If the joint filling material remains seen on the tile surfaces reach a hard consistency the dirt entering into these areas will make it difficult to clean the tile surfaces.

Such surfaces can only be cleaned using special chemicals.

Such special cleaning agents must be used in accordance with the directives of the producer of the chemicals.

The tile surfaces must be rinsed with sufficient amount of water in cleanings carried out after the tiling application.

On the other hand, the tiles whose surfaces are sensitive to acid must be cleaned using only water and neutral cleaning materials.

Colors become slightly blurred on the surface during the high-pressure pressing process due to the thickness of the paint layer. The pattern, texture, color, and the brightness come to light if this blurred effect seen on the surface can be intervened using a marble grinding machine to carry out a corrosion process either before or after the tiling.

This corrosion process must be carried out using a marble grinding machine. The grinding machine must use stones suitable for the tiles and the rules stated in the document entitled “The Technical Details regarding the Tile Flooring, Grinding, Protector Application and Maintenance” must be followed.  The floor experiences lots of abrasive scratches and circular scratches if the grinding process is not carried out “deliberatively” and “duly.” Such scratches not being noticed during the grinding process become visible later on when contaminated.

Following the grinding and polishing process, it is a must to apply an impregnated protector (sealer), which provides dirt and waterproofing and does not create a film layer on the surface.  There are suggestions in the document entitled “The Technical Details regarding the Tile Flooring, Grinding, Protector Application and Maintenance” about this matter.

Contamination and staining are unavoidable on the surfaces of the tiles with the incomplete grinding process and lack of protector (sealer) application.

The tiles must be checked very well before the flooring application. No complaints are accepted after the flooring application or after a cutting process is carried out on the tiles.

Patterned tiles-cement tiles may suffer damages in a short period of time if applied by incompetent people. This situation is not the fault of the tile but of the application performer.

How many hours should pass after the bonding application to step on the patterned tiles-cement tiles or to carry out a process on them?

They should never be opened to human traffic before 48 hours pass.

What points should I pay attention to when bonding patterned tiles-cement tiles?

The binding material must be checked before the application.

Expired, caked or hardened products should never be used.

Adhesive mortar must be prepared in accordance with preparation method as provided in the label information.

During the preparation of adhesive, the powder must be poured slowly on the water in the amount as specified in the package information and mixed until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. The mixture must be prepared with low-speed mixer.

No additive must be added, except those specified in the application instruction.

Surface preparation criteria must be observed.

Before the application, an adhesive class suitable to the location and application method must be selected.

In order to have a better adherence surface, mortar must be spread over the surface by the flat section of the trowel, then combed by the notched section of the trowel which fits the tile size.

Tiles must be adhered to the combed mortar by preferably applying force in the crustation period as specified in the label information.  This period may be shorter in the applications under adverse conditions such as high temperature, low humidity and windy.

No adherence must be applied on the expired mortar; mortar must be scraped off the surface.

The mortar expired or crusted in the container must be discarded.

Do not allow tiles adhered with cement-based products get into direct contact with water at least for 24 hours.

In the encaustic tile applications, surface dilatations must be considered. During coating process expansion joints must be created at certain intervals. Corner and expansion joints must strictly be applied with a suitable profile or polyurethane mastic.

What must I pay attention in selecting the Adhesive mortars for Patterned Tile Mosaics-Cement Tiles and their quantities?;

Pre-mixed adhesive mortars are single-component mortars, made up of commercially available Portland cement and chemical mixtures and hardens after blending it with water.

Current surface condition.

The surface being horizontal or vertical.

Location being indoors or outdoors.

Floors with heavy human and load traffic.

The location being a wet or dry area.

The usage purpose of the location.

While applying Patterned Tile Mosaics-Cement Tiles Adhesives, “weak bonding/tiles come away from the ground”, what must I do?

Reasons:

The floor is used before bonding is fully maintained.

Failure to add enough water to the mixture.

Ambient and surface temperatures are too high.

Combed adhesive exposed to wind (air current).

Waiting longer than that required for waiting in the air.

Failure to use a suitable adhesive.

Product with an expired shelf life.

Failure to use a combing size suitable to tile size.

Failure to use a bonding method suitable to tile size and application place.

Suggestions for Solution:

Do not ever apply pressure on it before bonding is fully maintained.

The absorbent ground must be moistened or primed.

Do not apply it at the higher temperatures.

Apply adhesive by using a combined method particularly in outdoor applications.

Strictly protect the surface from wind (air current).

No adherence must be applied on the expired mortar; mortar must be scraped off the surface.

The mortar expired or crusted in the container must be discarded.

Patterned Tile Mosaics – Cement Tiles) What must I pay attention to in application of grouting?

Tiles are porous although they are pressed under high pressures. Howsoever the preservative to be applied seals these pores, the product is still exposed to contamination. Especially, therefore, do not use dark color mortars on the light color tiles. Non-colored neutral gray is the best.

  • The joint filler material to be used must be specially selected. Issues to be considered in this regard:
  • Since the tiles are thicker than the regular ceramic and the joint gap is not more than 2-3 mm, the grouting material to be used should not exceed 600-700 microns. Otherwise, the joint gap cannot be filled and gaps remain.
  • The joint filler material should be developed with super plasticizer additives. When the fluid is supplied by putting too much water into it, a porous and water-absorbing joint filler is obtained, which accelerates the contamination, increases the water absorption and maximizes the related disadvantages.
  • When grouting, it is necessary to fill the gap completely and ensure that the joint filling material goes down to the floor.

Grouting must be controlled before application.

Expired, caked or hardened products must never be used.

Grouting mortar must be prepared in accordance with preparation method as provided in the label information.

During the preparation of grouting, the powder must be poured slowly on the water in the amount as specified in the package information and mixed until a homogeneous mixture is obtained.

The mixture must be prepared with low-speed mixer.

No additive must be added, except those specified in the application instruction.

Grouting must have same consistency both for floor and wall.

Before grouting, joints must be cleaned off and joints must be moistened so as to allow rapid dewatering of the grouting.

During the grouting, the first wiping must be done after joint remains on the tile surface became dull.

Grouting wiping must be done properly and exercise care not to allow dirt deposits on the tile surfaces being migrated into the joints.

For an application, grouting materials must be used that are suitable to the joint width and the room.

For expansion joints, for parapet and floor joining points, polyurethane-based grouting materials must be used.

  • Patterned Tile Mosaics- What is the rate of water absorption of Tile cement?

TSE finds it acceptable for water absorption as 8% of the total mass for the tiles to be used indoors, and 6 % of the total mass for the tiles to be used outdoors. The water absorption rates of the tiles we produce are below these values. In addition to the certificate of conformity to the 213-1 Standard (for indoor tiles), which has been issued for our Company by TSE for the indoor tiles and renewed by the audits carried out every year, we have been working for the certificate of conformity to the TSE 213-2 standard for outdoor tiles for the last 3 months. In these studies, the water absorption values are around 4-6 percent.

We continue our R & D studies to reduce this rate to 3-4 percent.

The issue of water absorption is not only related to the product but also to the processes and materials to be used during and after the flooring:

First, it is necessary to cut the water ingress from the bottom to minimize the water absorption of the tile. For this, an insulation work must be carried out on the floor. In addition, a G2TES2-based adhesive should be used, and this adhesive should be applied both to the floor (8 -10 millimeter toothed comb) and on the back of the tiles with a trowel or flat side of the comb. Modified with a rich polymer supplement, this adhesive will serve as an important barrier in preventing the water ingress from the bottom.

Second, the joint filler material to be used must be specially selected. Issues to be considered in this regard:

A. Since the tiles are thicker than the regular ceramic and the joint gap is not more than 2-3 mm, the grouting material to be used should not exceed 600-700 microns. Otherwise, the joint gap cannot be filled and gaps remain.

B. The joint filler material should be developed with super plasticizer additives. When the fluid is supplied by putting too much water into it, a porous and water-absorbing joint filler is obtained, which accelerates the contamination, increases the water absorption and maximizes the related disadvantages.

C. When grouting, it is necessary to fill the gap completely and ensure that the joint filling material goes down to the floor.

Third, the sealer / protection polish must be applied to the surface of the tiles, giving water and stain impermeability, and water ingress should be prevented from the top / surface. If water absorption rates are low in laboratory tests, these measures should be taken in practice. Because we cannot predict how long the climatic conditions will leave these floors in contact with water.

The application of protective varnish should be done once a year. As the absorption will be very low after the first application, there will be very little waste in the following years.

What must I pay attention in selecting the grouting mortars for Patterned Tile Mosaics-Cement Tiles and their quantities;

For Patterned Tile Mosaics-Cement Tiles, Is it ok not to leave joints?

Instruct your master to lay the tiles with joints between them suitable to the type of the product. Tiling without joints can cause swells, cracks, corner breaks on the tiles during the use of the tiles.

Is it possible to apply the grouting immediately after the application of the Patterned Tile Mosaics-Cement Tiles?

Following the completion of the adhesive works of the encaustic tiles, the grouting must start in at least 1 day or 1 week depending on the type of the adhesive, ambient conditions and the size of the coating.

How can I remove the contaminations, such as mortar remains, adhesive, lime, food, paint residuals etc. on the Patterned Tile Mosaics – Cement Tiles?

Since encaustic tiles are cement-based, never use aggressive cleaning chemicals such as lime remover. Clean the surface by sanding it.

After allowing surface be fully dried, you may remove spots by wetting a  # 180 or  # 220 fine sanding paper.

You can clean the products by using cleaners suitable the contaminating material. You can consult your sales representative for details.

You can refer to “Tiling Guidance” for more information about cleaning.

Patterned Tile Mosaics – Cement Tiles While grouting “cracking” appears, what must I do?

Reasons:

Rapid water loss,

Excessively absorbent surface.

Failure to use a product suitable for joint width.

Failure to moist the surface adequately.

Failure to use the right amount of water.

Ambient and surface temperatures are too high.

Surface exposed to wind (air current).

Earlier wiping off the surface or with excessive waters.

Joints containing chemicals preventing proper bonding.

Failure to create sufficient expansion joints for Patterned Tile Mosaics (Encaustic Tiles)

Suggestions for Solution:

Use a joint width suitable to the product.

Joints must be moistened with water adequately.

Use the proper amount of water.

Do not apply it under direct sunlight or at high temperatures.

Following the application, strictly protect the surface from wind (air current).

For outdoors, the surface is moistened after approx. 45 min. following the application (sap is given to surface)

How must I protect laid-out Patterned Tile Mosaics-Cement Tiles from construction debris?

You can cover the tiling with a material allowing air penetration (such as plywood).

How must the Regular Care of Patterned Tile Mosaics-Cement Tiles be done?

The regular cleaning frequency may vary as weekly, daily or multiple times a day depending on the contamination potential of the tiling.

Tiles must regularly be cleaned by washing with water. In addition, mild cleaning detergents can be used, depending on the contamination load of the surface. When cleaning with water, the dirty water on the surface must be rinsed with an adequate amount of clean water.

Such rinsing will prevent potential fouling remaining on the surface once tiles are dried off. Also, you may wipe-clean tile surfaces with a clean dried cloth.

Larges areas can be cleaned with light equipment with a cylindrical brush. Such equipment must be set to proper speed to impregnate the water-detergent blend into the water. Then rinsing must be completed by using cleaning water.

From time to time, the foreign substance may cause spots on the title.  In such cases, it must be cleaned by using a cleaner suitable to the nature of the spot.  Only water and neutral detergents must be used and before cleaning, make a test on a small surface to see the effect of the chemical on the surface.

It is strictly prohibited to use cleaners containing hydrofluoric acid because of their adverse impacts on the tile surface.

In addition, strictly avoid the improper cleaning with abrasive equipment because of their adverse impacts on the tile surface.

Do not strictly use the cleaners which may create a film layer on the tile surface.

About the warranty period and scope.

The duration and scope of the “warranty” which may be given to the tiles depends on the compliance of the rules during the installation and use.

* Because the tiles will be used outdoors and in an uncontrolled area open to the public, the installation must be carried out correctly and in accordance with the rules. Karoistanbul has a detailed instruction prepared for this issue. Flooring, joint filling, wiping and surface treatment and daily cleaning and maintenance work should be done in this direction.

* Tiles are products that can withstand normal human traffic and can be damaged by very hard impacts, the passage of vehicles on them, dragging heavy loads over them and so on.

* The ability of the tiles to be used safely for a long period of time is directly related to the strength or isolation of the qualities of the underlying floor.

* Tiles are particularly sensitive to aggressive chemicals (hydrochloric acid and other acidic substances). They must be protected against such products.

* Even if the tiles are protected against water and stains with sealer, some of the contaminants remain on the surface for a long time and it is more difficult to remove stains: Paint, thinner, machine oil, food residues, etc. should be cleaned on the surface without letting it stay on the surface for a long time. (This is especially required for the first months.)

* It should not be expected that these outdoor tiles can be used as perfectly clean and spotless as used indoor. No matter what floor covering material it is, it will be affæeæcted by the inevitable aadverse conditions that may be encountered outdoor.

However, taking the above mentioned issued into consideration, we assume that Karoistanbul will not take any responsibility for the problems that may occur during the flooring and usage, but other than that, we accept that we provide 2 year-guarantee for the defaults that are related to the product itself (strength, quality, color duration etc.).
