The history of Karoistanbul glazed tiles, which are a symbol of a synthesis of beauty,
functionality and creativity, of artwork and craftsmanship, of nostalgia and today,
of durableness and byssine, and which are a result of cooperation
between painters and craftsmen, go way before 160 years.
This typical Mediterranean product has spread all over the world after being produced
in France for the first time. You can also find many beautiful examples in Turkey till 1960's.
After this period many glazed tile producers diminished under the influence of the newly
emerging products like ceramic, linoleum and granite
which were much easier and cheaper to produce.
In 1997, Mavi Pencere Art Studio brought the tradition of patterned glazed tiles(cement tiles)
once again to light and started the production under the name of "Karoistanbul glazed tiles".
While you can choose between many anonymized nostalgic patterns
(geometric, vegetal, art deco and art nouveau motifs, borders, corners, plinths, plain tiles...),
you can also order glazed tiles composed of special designed patterns and colors.
Karoistanbul is preserving the handmade tradition of glazed tiles.
Presses are operated by highly skilled craftsmen who have the feeling for the right balance,
pour the material patiently and examine each tile with passion before they pile them on stacks.
Colors are arranged by painters, the pigments in the material are weighted using highly
sensitive scales; "35grams of red, 2.5grams of cobalt etc...".
The aggregate that is used in the mixture is specially chosen, it is clean, grated and standardized...
Nothing is done by halves. Only after the trials when the painters have decided that the colors
are right and fully saturated, the production starts...
Each color is recorded and archived.
